Back in May, I came across a Groupon for paddleboarding, and I decided to go this past weekend. I have never tried paddleboarding before, so I was curious to see how I’d do.
The Groupon I purchased was through Urban Kai Paddleboarding. Urban Kai has two locations: one in Tampa, and one in St. Pete. My boyfriend and I went to the Tampa location (located behind The Marriott and across from Jackson’s Bistro). The Groupon was for $35 for a one hour session with two people.
When we first arrived, we had to sign a waiver and get measured for our paddles. Afterwards, we were given our boards and a quick instruction on how to steer, turn, and get on/off the board. A few minutes later, we were on our own, paddleboarding along the Hillsborough River.
At first I thought it was extremely easy. Compared to surfing, this seemed like a piece of cake. As time went by, boats would pass us and create waves, forcing me to steer and keep my balance. The Florida heat started to get to me, and once we were going against the current, it was a little more challenging.
All in all, it was a great experience and work out. I’d love to try paddleboarding again, perhaps in St. Pete or at a spring, like Weechi Wachi. Hopefully I can see some wildlife next time!
