Resetting Your Body for the New Year

Posted by Kristen Baureis on 1/2/2017 to Diet and Nutrition

When it comes to holiday festivities, we tend to veer off track as far as nutrition and exercise goes. We consume foods that are high in sodium, sugar and fat which often leaves us feeling tired and sluggish. Many people strive to better themselves at the beginning of the new year through diet and exercise, but some lose motivation and fall into old habits.

Whether you are trying to bounce back into your normal routine or wanting to make lifestyle changes to your daily regimen, it’s important to reset your body so it’s prepared to make a healthy transition. Make sure to set attainable goals that aren’t too extreme; that way you will be more motivated to stick to your plan.

I have provided a list of recommended supplements to help you kick start 2017. I chose these supplements to help repair, rebuild, and replenish the body with vitamins, herbs and minerals. You can use these supplements daily if desired.

Detoxes are great to do a few times a year, especially after the holidays. They rid the body of chemicals, pollutants and waste and cleanse the organs. They also protect the immune system from illness. Some forms of detox include saunas, yoga, acupuncture and Epsom salt baths. If you’d like a nutritional detox, Vitamin Discount Counter has many detoxes for you to choose from.

A detox I highly recommend is Flor Essence Gentle Detox by Flora. This detox contains 8 medicinal herbs: burdock root, sheep sorrel, slippery elm, rhubarb, red clover, blessed thistle, kelp and watercress. These herbs soothe the digestive tract, provide antioxidants and phytonutrients, eliminate toxins and strengthen the body.

I started this detox after Thanksgiving, and it’s been the perfect reboot for my system. I have not felt any discomfort and I did not have to change my diet in any way (if you’re on a detox though, you should try to eat healthy). Many detoxes can be harsh on the digestive tract and bowels, but this detox is quite gentle.

Flor Essence is organic, non-GMO, plant based and gluten-free. It’s been the top selling detox in the natural foods industry for the past 10 years and has been sold in over 25 countries.

If you prefer tablets, Micheal’s Naturopathic Programs has a two week Ultimate Detox and Cleanse.

Nutritional Shake

Nutritional shakes are a great way to get all of your nutrients in one sitting, even if you don’t have time to create a nutritious meal. You can either drink them alone as a meal replacement, or pair it with another food such as oatmeal. When looking for a nutritional shake, be mindful of the ingredients. Make sure the nutritional content supports your daily requirements of vitamins and minerals. Look for shakes that are low in sugar and high in fiber and protein. Some shakes even provide greens, antioxidants and a probiotic/enzyme blend.

Vega One Nutritional Shake is a personal favorite of mine. Vega’s Nutritional Shake contains 20g protein, 6 servings of greens, 6 grams of fiber, and 50 percent of your daily intake of vitamins and minerals per scoop. Each serving also contains omega-3s and probiotics. There are about 150-160 calories per serving, depending on the flavor. This product is gluten free and vegan and non-GMO certified. This shake can be used as a meal replacement, a snack or used in other recipes like pancakes or smoothies. I usually make smoothies with my mixed berry nutritional shake and add spinach, banana, cashew milk and frozen berries.

Vega One Nutritional Shake comes in multiple flavors including mixed berry, coconut almond, vanilla chai, mocha, vanilla, chocolate and natural. Garden of Life’s Raw Organic Meal and Renew Life’s Skinny Gut Ultimate Shake are also great options.

Fish Oil

Fish oil consists of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids benefit the heart, eyes, skin, hair, fertility/pregnancy and may prevent or reduce inflammation.

Our bodies don’t create omega-3s, so we must consume them through food or supplements. Food sources of omega-3s include wild-caught salmon, white fish, herring, anchovies and sardines.

If you feel that you aren’t getting enough omega-3s in your diet, you may want to consider a supplement. Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega comes in softgels and in liquid form. It’s the number one selling fish oil in the United States and supports heart health, neurological health, and immunity.  It’s easily absorbed by the body and has no fishy aftertaste.

Our skin is our largest organ, but we don’t always provide it with the TLC it needs. It protects us from environmental factors such as pollutants, chemicals, infection and disease. Harsh elements can dry and irritate the skin, and as we age, our skin starts to wrinkle and sag. It’s important to retain the skin’s moisture and elasticity to maintain a healthy complexion. Vitamin Discount Center carries an assortment of skin care products, from lotions to body washes and soaps to moisturizers to eye cream.

Acure, Nubian Heritage and Reviva Labs are all excellent brands that restore, repair and hydrate the skin. I recommend:

Acure Eye Cream- reduces wrinkles and stimulates collagen production

Reviva Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream- contains antioxidants that fight against skin damage

Nubian Heritage Honey and Black Seed Body Wash – provides enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein to soothe, soften and moisturize skin’s appearance

Our lives can get fairly busy and hectic, but that doesn’t mean our health should be placed on the back burner. From our cells to our skin, it’s essential to care for our body if we want to live a long and healthy life. These supplements will eliminate toxins, protect against damage and nourish the body with nutrients. Supplementation with proper diet and exercise will keep you feeling refreshed from the inside out so you can look and feel your best. Here’s to a new, healthy you!
