What is oil pulling? It seems to be popping up everywhere as the trendiest type of oral care. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic technique of swishing or pulling oil in the mouth. Not to be replaced with teeth brushing, this holistic tradition has been used for thousands of years for whitening teeth, eliminating bacteria and supporting oral hygiene. Since our mouth is linked to our gut, it benefits our digestive system. Whenever we take in any kind of nourishing oil, our mouth releases enzymes that assist our microbiome. Oil pulling is also ideal for the immune system. The bacteria cling to the fat in the oil, which prevents bad microbes from travelling through our bloodstream and harming our health.
Benefits of oil pulling:
-prevents bad breath
-reduces inflammation in the gums
-strengthens the immune system
-detoxifies the body
-helps clear up the skin
How to oil pull:
Before you eat or drink, put about 2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil (sunflower and sesame oil work well, too) in your mouth and let it melt
Swish gently for 15- 20 minutes. This is a great time to complete other morning tasks. Try not to gargle or swallow the oil.
Spit the oil in the trash bin- not the sink. It could clog the drain
Rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth
